SERIOUS OPUNAKE CHARGE
ACCUSED MAN PLEADS GUILTY. EVIDENCE HEARD IN CAMERA. A charge- of unlawful carnal knowledge against Alexander John Fraser, farmer, was heard at Opunake yesterday. Fraser pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at New Plymouth for sentence.
Mr. A. A. Bennett, counsel for Fraser, made a request that the case be taken in the Children’s Court with a view to protecting the girl concerned from publicity. He pointed out that the magistrate had power to declare the Court a Children’s Court. The magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, agreed to the request and the evidence of all witnesses was heard as in the Children’s Court.
