HAWERA CARNIVAL WEEK
ASSISTANCE FOR UNEMPLOYED. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. Ways and means of raising £lOOO for the relief of Hawera unemployed were discussed by a well-attended public meeting at Hawera last night. On the suggestion of Mr. L. O. Hooker, who was responsible for calling the meeting, and who will orgaffise the effort, it was decided to hold a carnival in March. It will take the form of a queen carnival, a bazaar and a carnival week in the town, with a gala day at the park. The Mayor (Mr. J. E. Campbell), who presided, stressed the necessity for the effort. The bitizens’" relief committee, must have funds to continue its work. It had sufficient at present to last until April, but it could not carry on after that without more money. Mr. Hooker’s carnival, it was hoped, would provide the committee with funds for the next few years.
Mr. H. A. Morgan similarly emphasised the necessity for action. “ The following committees were elected: General, Messrs. J. E. Campbell (chairman), F. W. Homer, J. Dash, W. G. Simpson, H. A. Morgan, S. Chisholm, Mesdames Campbell and E. A. Pacey, Misses D. Swadling and P. Bates; bazaar, Messrs. Simpson, W. J. Bright, F. Pettitt, F. Ollerenshaw, J. Fraser, W. Fyfe, Mesdames Campbell, W. A. Quin, Adams, Webber, A. E. Stevens and Fyfe. It was decided to ask Mr. F. A. Quin to accept the secretarysTiip of the bazaar committee.
Both committees were given power to add, the general committee is to have added to it two members from each subcommittee, and various women’s organisations are to be approached to appoint delegates to the bazaar committee.
It was decided to ask the Hawera Rotary Club to take charge of the carnival week dance.
Mr. • Campbell', expressed the relief committee’s thanks to Mr. Hooker for setting the scheme in motion.
