ELTHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL

REPORTS ON MONTH’S WORK. SEPTIC TANK EXPLOSION DAMAGE. The monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held last night when reports on the work were received. The overseer stated that the borough streets had been cleared and the grass removed. The footpaths, park, reserves and cemetery were all cleaned. During flushing operations at York Street septic tank an explosion of gases occurred causing extensive damage to the roof. Repairs were being made. Traffic during the holiday month had been well-balanced, stated the inspector. A number of cars passed through during the Stratford races and all except two, who would be prosecuted, drove at a reasonable speed. Seventeen drivers’ licenses were issued, being an increase on last year both for new drivers and renewals. Two permits were issued for alterations to buildings and one old building was pulled down. Residents had delayed cutting their noxious weeds but proceedings would be issued if the weeds were not attended to by the end of the month. Nine head of stock were impounded. The caretaker reported that the oval fence at Taumata Park had been painted and old wire-netting removed. Thirteen mamaku ferns were planted in the bush. Camping fees collected amounted to £1 6s. The macrocarpa trees at the soldiers’ memorial park were badly knocked about by the recent gale and had to be rammed back into position. It was decided to instal a gas light in the park pavilion cookhouse and a gas ring in the refreshment stall. It was also decided to instal three extra gas rings and a meter for the use of campers. The construction of a groyne in the river at Taumata Park would receive attention before the winter, it was decided. The matter was left in the hands of the works and reserves committees with power to act. The Taranaki Power Board advised that it would make no charge for the current used for Christmas decorations. The Mayor was authorised to arrange for a custodian to live on the • library premises. A letter was received from the Hawera Chamber of Commerce asking support for the chamber’s move to have Taranaki included in the tourist itinerary. The Mayor said it was only fair that Taranaki should have a share of the tourists and it was resolved to support the request. The Mayor reported that the finance committee had recommended that the whole of the council’s loans be converted on the basis of 20 years for ordinary loans and 25 years for State Advances loans. ELTHAM TALKIES. A GOOD COMEDY. “Movie Crazy,” to show at the Eltham Theatre to-night and Monday night is one of the best pictures Harold Lloyd has ever appeared in, and is the first picture he has made in two years. This comedian is as funny in himself as much as in what he does, and in “Movie Crazy” he never stops doing it. Through an accident, Lloyd is invited to Hollywood to make a test, which shows him to be the worst actor in the world, but through one idiotic contretemps after another, he intrigues a lady star and she falls in love with him. There are screamingly funny scenes. He obtrudes himself upon a movie scene at sea in the making. Hearing the girl call for help he emerges from a crate and has a dingdong fight in the flooded vessel with the villain. New gags and hilarious situations follow with such rapidity that one is left a laugh-wreck at the end of the j show. I
