GREETINGS BY TASMAN MAIL

ONE NEWSPAPER TO ANOTHER. “EGMONT’S MAGNIFICENT CONE.” By the Southern Cross on Saturday Mr .T. C. List, proprietor of the Taranaki Daily News, received a letter of greeting from Mr. Thomas Dunbabin, editor of the Sydney Telegraph. “I am very glad,” said Mr. Dunbabin, “to be able to take advantage of the opportunity kindly offered by Mr. Nielson, of Taranaki, of sending to you a letter expressing, on behalf of the Telegraph and of myself the very best New Year wishes to yourself and to the Taranaki Daily News.

“I very much regret that so far our acquaintance has been confined to meeting at the other side of the world. On the only occasion when I visited New Zealand I unfortunately omitted to visit Taranaki. The nearest that I have been to it is to see the magnificent cone of Mount Egmont, the finest sight that I have ever seen, with the exception (if I may say so) of the peak of Teneriffe. I have very pleasant memories of the kindness and courtesy of the people of New Zealand from Auckland to Dunedin.

‘“I have always felt strongly that it is most important that the people of Australia and the people of New Zealand should know each other better. A very large number of New Zealanders make their homes in Sydney and do exceedingly well here. I would like to see more Australians visiting New Zealand. And I feel sure that when they do they will be wise not to follow my example, but to be sure to see Taranaki.”
