SURPLUS AMBULANCE FUNDS

STRATFORD APPEAL CLOSES. WHOLE GIVEN TO HOSPITAL BOARD A second public meeting in connection with the raising of funds for the Stratford. district ambulance was ■ held at Stratford last night. The first was held not a month ago and decided to open a subscription list; to the second last night it was reported that the money in hand was £239 ss. The meeting decided that tlie money should be given to the hospital board to be applied solely to ambulance purposes, in which is included aid to the St. John Ambulance Association.. The ambulance is to be regarded as a memorial to the late Mr. Charles Score Sanders, pioneer of Ngaere and the donor in his will of £250 to the Stratford Hospital Board. Those present at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), N. Buckley, j. L. O. Rowe, J. C. Robins, L. Bunn, W. Hoskin, W. L. Kennedy; A. H. R. Amess, D. J. Malone,. C. F. Vincent and W. D. Young (secretary). The Mayor recalled the steps that had, been taken leading to the first meeting. He said the committee set up had been authorised only to collect money to pay the £2OO needed. They had more than that and that was the reason for the present meeting—to decide what should be done with the extra money. Mr. Young read a semi-detailed statement of the subscription lists showing receipts of £243 16s 6d and expenditure o’E £4 Ils 6d. The Mayor moved that the subscription lists be closed and that £2OO be handed to the hospital board forthwith. Both motions were carried and the Mayor invited suggestions for the application of the surplus. Mr. Hoskin moved that the extra money be given to the hospital board to be kept apart for use in providing extra comforts in - and about the ambulance. Mr. Robins in seconding added that there was no doubt additions to equipment would be needed. Mr. Amess put in a plea for assist-, ance for the.’ St. John Ambulance Association, which had formed a brigade at Stratford recently but had not enough money to obtain uniforms. Uniforms were necessary to give’the officers some standing. Mr. Malone supported Mr. Amess and Messrs Bunn and Kennedy, members of the hospital board, assured the meeting that assistance for the St. John Ambulance would be forthcoming from the board.

The Mayor said the St. John Association was deServing of help but he thought the assisting should be left to the hospital board, to which the surplus fund should be made over. It was decided to give the remainder of the fund to the hospital board for ambulance purposes. The Mayor suggested that as the ambulance was the memorial to Mr. Sanders a suitable photograph be taken and a silver plate attached. A plate was being attached to the ambulance, it was stated.
