POVERTY BAY PIONEER
DEATH OF MRS. M. J. BAYLY. MARRIED TO TARANAKI MAIJ/ Mrs, Mary Jane Bayly, wife of Mr. Humphry M. Bayly, formerly of New. Plymouth, and who is a member of a Taranaki family, has died at Gisborne. Mrs. Bayly’s life was closely connected with the development of the Poverty Bay district. i Mrs. Bayly was the elder daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Hunter, Auckland, leaving there shortly after her marriage. For a time after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Bayly lived at New Plymouth. Forty years ago Mr. Bayly became interested in the possibilities of land development on the east coast, and he settled there at a time when many areas of fine hill country were just being brought into productivity. He purchased the Paritu property and for many years made it his home, though in the. early stages of his occupancy the station was not served by' any road more pretentious than a cart track. His capability in the improvement of hill country was well illustrated by the manner in which Paritu developed during his handling of the property, and later by his work on
other extensive holdings which casaa under his hand as his influence extended. In .the past 30 years Mr. Bayly handled a large number of stations, and profited by his sense of anticipation of district development. Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bayly made their home at Gisborne. Settlers in the backblocks of the district remember Mrs. Bayly’s many courteous and kindly acts and her interest in the welfare of her fellow-resi-dents. Mrs. Bayly was buried at the Makaraka cemetery.
