SPORT FOR CHILDREN

VOGELTOWN’S GALA DAY.

SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL EFFORT.

In perfect weather a large crowd of parents, friends and children gathered at the Vogeltown school on Saturday for the school gala day. The scene was an animated one, with happy children taking part in games and races, patronising the stalls (ice, cream was particularly favoured) and, when heated, enjoying a dip in the Huatoki pool. The gala day, which was arranged by the Home and School Association, assisted by the teache ~ is to be an annual treat. Two of the classrooms were requisitioned for an exhibit of handwork. In one work typical of that done by the upper school, from standard I. upward, was displayed. Writing, drawing in pencil and pastels, needlework, raffia work l and woodwork, all of surprisingly high standard, were arranged on the walls and on tables, and proved a centre of interest and admiration for many visitors. The work of the primer classes—blackboard writing, paper-cutting and drawings in chalks—also attracted attention, the originality of the drawings evoking much favourable comment.

Afternoon tea was served in the cool of one of the classrooms, music being provided by a stringed orchestra conducted by Miss E. L. Dowling. Afternoon tea was also served by willing helpers to the children.
