SOUTH TARANAKI GAMES

HAWERA’S GOOD PATCH DRAW WITH KAPONGA ELEVEN. S. BETTS’ BRILLIANT CENTURY. Hawera struck a good patch at Kaponga and held the home team to a draw despite a brilliant century by S. Betts. The game was one of high scores, Hawera making 269 and Kaponga 235 for two wickets. Hawera won the toss and the batting showed unusual solidity, nine men reaching double figures and six making more than 20. Bray again was top scorer, while Penny also was in form. Penny, Fraser and Warnes paced the way for the' big score by putting on 81 for the first two wickets. Kaponga had only two hours and five minutes to bat, so that a draw appeared inevitable. BIG SCORING IN OLD BOYS GAME.

H. BARKER BATS VERY WELL.

at Hawera, replying to 207 for nine wickets with 168 for four wickets. Though the scoring was high, the best individual tally was 54 by H. Barker. Lay with the help of a breeze bowled very well, swinging away and breaking back —ideal bowling on such a true wicket. Stratford batted very confidently from the outset, Sandford and Hall giving the side a, start of 75. However, time was too short for the Old Boys total to be reached. Details are:— OLD BOYS. W.
