CRICKET GAMES

TARANAKI COMPETITIONS BETTS’ BRILLIANT CENTURY SOUTHERN GAMES DRAWN WESTERN PARK IN NORTH The Taranaki cricket competitions; were continued on Saturday, when ideal; conditions prevailed throughout the province. Only one senior game was decided in the north-as the New Plymouth Boys’ High School team is visiting Nelson. -Western Park (196) beat New Plymouth (134) in a one-day match at Pukekura Park. The pitch was in favour of the bowlers and the outfield was very fast, The fielding on the whole was patchy and several catches were dropped. E. 'Spedding accounted for a splendid knock for 47, while A. Clarke and R. Gibbins played sterling cricket for 23 each. With the New Plymouth batsmen fighting valiantly over the later \ stages to play out time the Park bowlers managed to secure the last wicket with only seven minutes to spare. Parkinson and Ewart were bowling well, while for New Plymouth Ferry and Groombridge returned the best averages, although D. Crapper was bowling exceptionally well. Both South Taranaki games were drawn, Kaponga just failing to reach Hawera’s total in time and Stratford having the better of the game with Old Boys. There was high scoring in both games and S. Betts made his second con-.-secutive century-—166 in 127 minutes. At Hawera Old Boys made 207 for nine wickets declared, H. Barker 54 and Moloney 44. Lay bowled well to take five wickets for 61 runs. Stratford lost four wickets for 168 (Hall 46). Hawera made 269 at Kaponga, Bray 46 and Penny 44, with seven others making double figures. V. Betts took five wickets for 90 runs. Kaponga had 235 on for the loss of two wickets. Court (49) helped Betts in a first wicket stand of 216, probably a record for South Taranaki. Both wickets helped the batsmen and the outcricket was further handicapped by the great heat.
