PUNIHO SCHOOL CONCERT

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

The main school room at Puniho was crowded on Friday evening, when the first school concert for several years was held. The first half of the programme consisted of songs, part songs, recitations, and folk dances while the second half was taken up with a play provided by the senior pupils. The programme opened with the New. Zealand anthem sung by Standards I—7. This was followed by an action song, “The Soldiers’ March” hy Standard I—2 pupils. Accompanied by Joan Goodwin, Dorothy Moffitt played a violin solo, Beethoven’s “Minuet in G,” followed by the song “The Ash Grove” by Standard 3—7, a recitation “Those Pants that Mother Makes” by Ted Stanley, and “The Norwegian Mountain March,” by , the senior girls and boys.. A popular item on the programme was “Little Boy Blue,” 'in which the chief parts were taken by Laurie Gilmer and Mary Kalin. Following the part song “O Rest Thee Babe” by Standards 3—7, were three folk dances by the senior girls, Standards I—2 and the primers. Kathleen Stanley recited “I Want to Know,” after which Standards I—21 —2 sang “The Pixies’ Crade Song.” The senior girls gave a fine performance of the folk dance “Reaping the Flax” and of ball drill. The first half of the programme concluded with the rounds “When the Rosy Mom” and “Goodnight to You All” sung by Standard 3—7. The second half was taken up with the presentation of the playlet “The Saucy Jane.” The characters were played by T. McEldowney, J. Goodwin, E. Tuku, A. Petersen, C. Kalin, M. Johns, B. Moffitt, J. Moffitt, G. McEldowney, E. Gilmer, D. Tuku, K. Ngawhare, K. Petersen, J. Parratt, B. Eves and K. Ngawhare.

Before presenting the prizes at the conclusion of the programme the chairman of the school committee (Mr. S. H. Cooke) tendered the committee’s thanks to the headmaster (Mr. E. C. Coleman), Miss E. Garcia and Mrs. Coleman for organising the concert and training the children.

The prizes were:— Form II: Dux of school, Ellen Gilmer, Jean Moffitt 2.

Form I: Tom McEldowney 1, Joan Gilmer 2; handwork, C. Kalin. Standard 4: Eileen Tuku 1, Mildred Johns 2; handwork, K. Ngawhare; composition, John Parratt; arithmetic, Ken Petersen.

Standard 3: Patricia Gilmer 1, Gwen Stanley 2. Standard 2: K. Stanley 1; handwork and drawing, C. Hance. Standard 1: Laurie Gilmer 1, Gwen Stanley 2. All the other pupils also received a present. Before and after the concert those present inspected a display, of the pupils’ work which was on exhibition in the infant room.
