Workmen in the quarry ran before an avalanche of earth.

Tremors have been occurring in .the district intermittently for some years, but have been more frequent and pronounced since December 1, when many buildings were damaged. On December 8 the residents were- alarmed when a subterranean explosion shook the buildings.
