An American Devil’s Island is being established by the Federal Government on the island of Alcatraz, in San Francisco Bay, which has been a military prison for 20 years. The island is a mile from the mainland. Its area is 12 acres and it is surf-beaten and difficult of approach, though ferries pass somewhat near.
It is intended to send there 600 of the worst type of criminals, including Al. Capone, the notorious gangster, habitual schemers and those who retain outside contacts.
There are 600 cells; thus each criminal will be isolated. There is also a complete group of buildings which the army authorities are vacating.
