HAWERA ITEMS

Mrs. Bradmore, Tauranga, has been the guest of Mrs. Symes, South Road for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. B. Hart and family. Warkworth, are staying with Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bright. Miss I. Watty, who is staying with Mrs. L. J. Bull, returned from a month’s visit to Auckland on Monday. Mrs. H. G. Staple, “Park View,” Rotorua, is spending a few weeks at Hawera with her daughter, Mrs. C. Whittington. Miss Alison Kemp, who has been spending several weeks’ holiday at Wanganui as Miss M. Todd’s guest, returned home on Tuesday. Miss Meg. Kissling, Remuera, Auckland, arrived on Wednesday and is Miss M. Black’s guest. Mrs. D. Powell, Wanganui, is visiting Hawera. The Hawera Croquet Club will officially open its lawns for the summer this afternoon. Mrs. Page and Miss Anne Page entertained a few friends at morning tea at the club on Wednesday in Mrs. N. Mirams’ honour. Mrs. Mirams arrived recently from the South Island for a few weeks. Mesdames E. R. Bavin, H. M. Caselberg, B. Stott, H. H. Bramwell, J. J. Pease, V. Powell and Misses B. Theed and E. Buist were among the guests. On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. G. A. Burgess was “at home,” when a number of guests assembled at tea. The hostess wore a smart gown of dark navy silk. Mesdames Moorhouse, H. D. Cameron, A. Woodward, W. F. Buist, C. Hawken, A. Hunter, A K. Fyson, Dickie, W. Fendall, Miss Buchanan and Miss J. Buchanan were present. Blue wood hyacinths, golden marigolds, wallflowers and blue iris made pretty colour contrasts in Mrs. D. G. Smart’s room on Thursday when she entertained at a very enjoyable morning tea. Mesdames Symes, C. Tonks, Woodward, W. Dingle, L. J. Bull, B. Hart (Warkworth), W. J. Bright, Misses Symes and I. Watty were among those present. a . . A small party of friends consisting of Mesdames E. R. Bavin, V. Powell, N. Mirams (Milton), G. W. Powdrell, J. Rowe, H. Swinbum, H. H. Bramwell, Misses Helen Wood, B. Theed and A. Page gathered on Thursday for morning tea at the club to say farewell to Mrs. B. E. Stott, who is to leave for Wellington on Monday. Mrs. A. Harrop has returned from a short visit to Inglewood. Wearing a smart gown of plum coloured silk lace with coatee fur-trimmed, Mrs. R. S. Allwright was hostess at tea on Tuesday afternoon, when Mesdames Speer, H. H. Bramwell, W. Syme, C. Harrison, N. F. Stead, J. Ogle, C. O. Pratt and Mdlle. Poyau were present. Flowers made beautiful decorations in Mrs. C. Bayley’s sitting-room on Monday when she entertained Mesdames Symes, H. G. Whitehead, Parrington, Bradmore (Tauranga), L. J. Bull and Miss Symes at tea. There were bowls of iris and anemones and tall slender vases of tulips. Mrs. Bayley wore a smart black silk crepe frock. Mesdames A. Good, A. K. Fyson, G. J. Bayley, H. R. Kemp, H. Whitehead, W. M. Winks, W. G. Strange, H. W. Swinbum and H. H. Bramwell entertained friends at tea on various days during the week. Mr. and Mrs. B. Stott will leave on Monday to take up residence at Wellington. Miss S. Lovell is on a short visit to the South Island. She is visiting friends at Christchurch. Last Friday night the committee of the Hawera Croquet Club held a bridge and five-hundred evening in the Rewa rooms. The venture ■was most successful, there being fourteen tables in play. Prizes for the highest scores were won by Mrs. Dickie (bridge), and Mrs. Clapham (fivehundred). Consolation gifts were awarded to Mrs. R. B. Douglas and Mr. Lovell. Hawera Red Cross Society. A successful “bring and buy” afternoon was held in the Hawera Red Cross rooms on Wednesday, over £2 being raised at a stall selling produce, flowers and seedlings. This was to assist with the V.A.D. funds. The room was attractively arranged as a drawing room and gaily decorated with salmon pink azaleas, jasmine and aspidistra palms. An enjoyable and varied concert programme was presented during the afternoon, the following contributing items: Misses A. Whyte and P. McGlashan, songs; Jocelyn Evans and Dell Barrow, pianoforte duet; Ruth Sunderland and Stewart Naim, vocal duet; Ila Percival, recitation; Nada Sorenson, song; and Tui Jones, Maori song. Mrs. W. A. Quin played the accompaniments. A competition for a blue organdie duchess set was won by Miss S. Seaver. . Among those present were the president (Mr. E. K. Cameron), and Mrs. Cameron, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Shaw, Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe, Sister L. G. Small, Mesdames Gillanders, W. A. Quin, Wade, Evans, Misses Whyte, P. McGlashan, P. Baker, Apps and the members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment, who served afternoon tea.

Yorkshire Ginger Cake. Whisk a couple of eggs, add a quarter of a pint of cream, beat it in, and stir the mixture over the fire in a pan till warm. Cream half a pound of cutter with an ounce of ground ginger and a quarter of a pound of granulated sugar, slowly stir it into the eggs and cream over a moderate heat, and continue to stir until all is perfectly smooth. Add flour slowly, with a pinch of salt, to form a paste which can be rolled and cut into little cakes. Bake in a moderate oven.
