LOSERS BY FIRE HELPED. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Askew, who recently lost their home by fire, were given a social gift evening by friends on Thursday evening. The social was held at the residence of Mrs. A. J. Rookes, the hostesses being Mesdames Rookes, A. Davis and W. Watts. An enjoyable evening was spent with games and competitions, prizes being won by Mrs. A. W. Mapp and Miss Olive Rookes, Messrs. A. R. Askew and L. Mapp. Mr. Askew contributed a violin solo and Mr. J. B. Hunt a recitation. Mrs. Yandle played the music for the games. Mr. Walter Vickers expressed the regret felt by all at the unfortunate loss suffered by Mr. and Mrs. Askew and asked them to accept the gifts as a token of the esteem in which they were held. He also read a letter from the Loyal Midhirst Lodge conveying a message of sympathy and assistance to Mr. and Mrs. Askew. Mrs. Rookes and Mrs. Watts then opened the parcels, which contained a good assortment of useful gifts. Mr. Askew on behalf of Mrs. Askew and his family thanked the donors for their kindness, particularly Mrs. Rookes, Mr. and Mrs. C. Davis and Mr. and Mrs. Watts, who had accommodated them since the fire. Personal.

Mr. and Mrs. Steckle, New Plymouth, are the guests of their daughter, Mrs. A. Kaspar. Mr. M. Davis has returned from Wellington, where.he attended the dairy conference. Captain Mercer, who landed at Stratford on Tuesday, was seen flying low in the vicinity of Radnor Road by many of the residents. The plane passed close over the school, proving an interesting sight to the children, most of whom had not before seen a plane aloft in those conditions.
