ECHO OF SHOOTING CASE
money lent for costs. JUDGMENT AGAINST MRS. LONG. Memory of the Cashmere shooting sensation was revived in the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch, when Mrs. Myrtle Long, the accused in the criminal trial, defended an action taken by Miss Mabel Gertrude James' to recover £44 4s 6d, alleged to have been lent to Mrs. Long for Court and counsel’s fees. Judgment was given by Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., for plaintiff, for the amount claimed, with costs. Mrs. Long was convicted in April last on a charge of doing grievous bodily harm to Arthur Henry Way. Mr. Thomas, counsel for plaintiff, said the case hinged upon a criminal trial in Christchurch. At the request of the police, Miss James acted as companion to Mrs. Long before and during the trial; she had saved a certain amount of money and advanced £5O for Mrs. Long’s bail. She also met the costs of prosecution and solicitor’s costs. For the liquidation of those expenses the money advanced by Miss James as bail was handed over at Mrs. Long’s request. Counsel said that' Mrs. Long had said that her husband, from whom she was separated, would pay the expenses, but now she took up the attitude that Miss James had advanced the money voluntarily and that she could not pay it To Mr. Archer, counsel for defendant, Miss James admitted that there had been a quarrel, but the Court actions were not brought solely because of that. Mr. Archer submitted that Miss James knew she was doing a very generous act and at the same time had taken a chance of losing her money, as she knew Mrs. Long's financial position. Mrs. Long’s husband had promised to pay, but nothing had been done by him. It was a most unfortunate Supreme Court action—it was generally accepted that the fault was not on the part of Mrs. Long. j The magistrate said he was satisfied that the money advanced had been in the nature of a loan.
