EFFORT TO WRECK CAR

EXPLOSION UNDER VEHICLE.

HOLES PIERCED IN FLOOR.

Residents in the vicinity of the Buller hospital at Westport and inmates of the institution were considerably startled one recent evening by a loud report of what appeared to be an explosion. As a result of investigations the police began to look for the author of what apparently was an attempt to blow up a motor-car,

. Mr. Eli Heelam, employed as porter at the hospital, parked his new sedan car at the back of the building and adjacent to the living quarters. About 7.30 p.m. explosion was heard near the car, and it was discovered that the windows and head-lamps were smashed and other damage done to the vehicle. The floor of the car was perforated with holes as a result of stones being forced through.it by the explosion. The engine was- not damaged to any great extent, but it . b.re evidence of the force of the detonation. The charge was evidently placed beneath the car. The owner of the car was also a member of the firm of Heelam and Moore and although Mr. Heelam has no enemies and cannot attribute any reason for such an act, everything points to a deliberate attempt having been made to wreck the car.
