STRIKE OF GOLDMINERS

SITUATION CONSIDERED CRITICAL.

EFFORT BY GOVERNMENT FAILS.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.

Cape Town, Sept. 23. The Government’s effort to settle the goldminers* strike has failed. At Simmer timbermen and shipmen have been ordered out but pumpmen are allowed to work on suffrance as their witndrawal would mean that three neighbouring mines would be flooded. The secretary of the Mineworkers Association states that all unions concerned in mining are endeavouring to co-ordin-ate their demands, feeling that the workers are not sharing in the benefit of the gold premium. The Federation has been sunynoned for October 3. The situation is regarded as critical.
