DEATH OF MR. LIVINGSTON

PIONEER SETTLER OF TOKAOKA.

SON OF “PRESIDENT OF HAWERA.”

The death of Mr. Frederick S. C. Livingston, a pioneer setler of Tokaora, occurred at Hawera yesterday. Bom at Waipapa 62 years ago, he was the eldest son of the late Mr. James Livingston and played his part in the development of the district. For the last 35 years he was farming on Rainie Road. He was one of the earliest members of the Hawera Football Club and his ability on the field carried him into the Taranaki team.

Mr. Livingston is survived by his wife, two sons, Messrs. Guy and James, and a daughter, Miss Jessie Livingston, all residing in the Hawera district. Mr. G. Livingston, Takapuna, is a brother and Mrs. J. H. Baker, South Road, a sister.

Mr. James Livingston was elected president of the Republic of Hawera by a meeting of settlers in 1879, following the failure of repeated appeals to the Grey Government for protection from the Natives. The republic gradually faded out of existence after its first year of activity and Mr. Livingston occupied himself with his farm at Tokaora. It is said the family name is perpetuated in the word “Tokaora,” “Toko” meaning “stone” and “ora” “living.” PATEA LADIES’ GOLF TITLES.
