MANUTAHI NOTES

GOOD CONCERT AND DANCE. A concert and dance was held in the hall on Wednesday evening. Despite unfavourable weather there- was quite a good attendance. The programme consisted of a one-act play by the Whakamara Dramatic Club, items by local performers and a debate on the subject “That town life is preferable to country life” between teams representing the Whakamara and Manutahi districts. The production and scenic effects of the play “Eldorado” reflected credit on the visitors who gave a finished rendering. The producer was Mr. C. J. Williams and those taking part were Messrs. J. Christie, N. Barkla, Miss Gulliver and Mrs. Gulliver. Items were given by Mrs. A. Thomson (violin solos), Misses Eileen Harvie and M. O’Sullivan (songs), and Mr. D. M. JUlett (humorous item). The Manutahi debaters, who took the affirmative, were Messrs. D. M. Jillett, JS. O. Schwass, C. Barclay and A. Thomson. Messrs. J. Christie, le Fleming, Davies and Smith represented Whakamara. Mr. J. Couch occupied the chair. On a show of hands the Manutahi team was declared the winner. Supper was provided by the Manutahi ladies. For the dance that followed Mrs. Gulliver and Miss M. Miss Ethel Tapp has been appointed assistant at the Te Reinga native school. Miss Tapp was recently relieving assistant at the Alton and Manutahi schools. Mrs. G. Scown is visiting Mrs. H. Dickson, Ohangai. Mrs. C. Barclay is at Hawera. Nurse Grey and Mr. Pargeter, of the Health Department, Wanganui, visited the Manutahi school on Friday.
