MILK GRADING DISPUTE

REPLY TO BUSH DISTRICTS. MINISTER ON REGULATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahiatua, Last Night. 'Replying to the resolution at Woodville of the Bush District Dairy Factories’ Association the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, says the new regulations for grading of milk for the manufacture of cheese had received very careful consideration prior to and since being gazetted. No complaint of moment had been received, excepting from the district represented at the meeting and one other district represented by five companies. As experience was gained by those carrying out the work of grading the merits of the present system and more particularly in so far as it included the curd test were becoming more generally appreciated, said Mr. Macmillan. “It is known a great majority of cheese factory managers in the Dominion favour the use of the curd test from the standpoint of efficiency,” he added. “It is also known that a great 'majority of dairy scientists consider one test inadequate for the proper classifying of milks.

“I have given the matter much consideration and have referred to the statements of dairy scientists in New Zealand and in older countries. I am personally of the opinion that the regulations should not be amended unless the future proves them to be inadequate. I trust that the association will ensure that the requirements of the regulation as gazetted will receive an unbiassed and fair opportunity of making good throughout the current season and that managers will give the instructor in the district their hearty co-operation so as to cause milk grading to be as efficient and satisfactory as possible.”
