HAWERA ITEMS

Miss E. Buist and Miss P. Murphy, Dawson Falls, returned this week from Tongariro National Park. Miss Patricia Lennon, who is spending a holiday at Auckland, spent several days last week at “Otimai,” the Guide training centre. Mrs. A. Woodward went on Wednesday to Wanganui, later going on to Hunterville, where she is the guest of Mrs. Mair. Miss D. Meyrick, Hamilton, who has been Miss Joyce Evans’ guest, returned to Stratford this week on a short visit before returning north. Miss M. Washer has been visiting Mrs. N. Douglas at Stratford for the past week. Among those entertaining at afternoon tea during the week were Mrs. W. G. Strange, Mrs. A. H. Harvey, Mrs. H. R. Denise, Mrs. J. Ogle, Mrs. H. H. Bramwell and Mrs. J. E. Campbell. Miss Olga Harding returned to Auckland on Saturday last. Miss K. Syms returns home during the week-end. Mrs. H. D. Cameron was hostess at tea on Tuesday afternoon, when to receive her guests she wore a pretty afternoon frock of floral georgette in cherry tonings. Mrs. Moorhouse wore an ensemble fashioned in a darker figured silk. Among those present were Mesdames J. W. Ashwell, R. J. O’Dea, J. Ogle, Lash (New Plymouth), G. A. Burgess, J. B. Murdoch, E. S. Fossey, Gilby (Wellington), W. G. Strange, A. Harrop, W. Fossey, Quin and Misses O’Sullivan (New Plymouth), M. Burgess and Everiss (New Plymouth). About 25 members of the garden circle assembled at the Women’s Club on Thursday, when an interesting afternoon was spent, many useful hints being learned and a paper on topical suggestions being read by Mrs. Kemp. On Tuesday evening a surprise party arranged by Misses Mickey Hawken and Anne Bright visited Miss Jocelyn Lennon at her father’s home, Erin Street, a very jolly time being spent with games, music and dancing. Miss J. Lennon wore a pretty frock of white organdi, while Misses M. Hawken and A. Bright wore frocks of pale blue and green organdi respectively. Misses M. Thomson, H. Collins, M. Collins, J. Hunter, P. Murray, M. Knowles, Hawken, P. Hay-Mackenzie, Pat. Brown, Peggy Brown, Jimmie Lysaght, Bright, G. Williams (Meremere) and H. Nicholls (Te Aroha) comprised the “surprises.” Following the close of the competitions festival last week the committee entertained the adjudicators and the official accompaniste at an informal supper party. Mrs. F. W. Horner, wife of the president, who was hostess, wore ■ a smart gown of wallflower brown crushed velvet. Madame.. Edith Baird wore a fitting model in cherry satin mousseline and berthe of gold frosted georgette, with which she wore a shimmering evening coat of diamonded French beading in jet and silver. Miss Elizabeth Blake wore a smartly cut gown in geranium red and flesh pink, trimmed with diamante, and a magnificent wrap shawl orientally embroidered. Miss Kathleen Fairhall, official accompaniste during the festival, chose a forest green ring velvet cut" on very modern lines with white coatee. Mrs. M. Richardson, Kakaramea, was a visitor to Hawera during the week. Miss Nancy Duckworth left yesterday to spend the week-end at Palmerston North. Mrs. Archie Bailey, Wanganui, has been the guest of Mrs. W. A. Duckworth, Glover Road. Mrs. R. S. Allwright will return from .Wellington on Monday. On Thursday evening the third of a series of bridge matches between president’s and vice-president’s teams met at the club, the latter team winning for the third time in succession. The play is for a handsome silver cup presented by Mrs. W. Adams. Mrs. Duckworth entertained a few friends at tea at the club during the week in honour of Mrs. Bailey, Wanganui, who was her guest. The bridge circle’s ladder games played during the week have resulted as follows: Miss Ingles and Mrs. Evans won from Mesdames Wylie and J. Y. Hall; Mrs. R. F. Page and Miss Caplen won from Mrs. P. 0. Veale and Miss D. Richardson; Mrs. Evans and Miss Ingles won from Mesdames J. E. Campbell and A. E. Stevens. A farewell visit to Mrs. E. Peach was made by members of the Turuturu Women’s Institute committee on Monday. Mrs. Peach will shortly leave Hawera to reside at Johnsonville. The president, Mrs. W. H. James, presented Mrs. ’ Peach with a bouquet and from the committee an afternoon tea cloth, embroidered with the names of the committee. A happy evening was spent at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Johnson, Tokaora, on Tuesday. Tne large room, made cosy by a cheerful log fire and gay decorations was well filled with friends. There were songs, recitations, dancing, a humorous play-reading and a charade, which brought into use some old-fashioned garments, and was particularly well acted. Pianoforte and elocutionary items were rendered by the Misses Susan and Betty Johnson. COMING OF AGE AT NORMANBY. A happy gathering was held last Saturday at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Boothby, Normanby, when they entertained a number of relatives and friends in honour of/.he coming of age of their neice, Miss Mavis Haylock, Christchurch. The reception rooms were decorated with sweet-scented spring flowers. Those present spent a thoroughly enjoyable time dancing and playing games and competitions. After supper the attractive birthday cake was cut by the guest of honour. Mrs. Boothby presented her niece with a gold key which had been sent from Christchurch by Miss Haylock’s parents. The guest after being accorded musical honours was called upon to open a large number of gifts. Dancing was continued until midnight. Pihama. Miss A. Dickson, who broke her wrist some time ago when cranking a car, is making satisfactory progress to recovery. Miss L. Knowles is spending a short holiday at Palmerston North. Miss N.
