Mrs. E. L. Humphries and Mrs. G. S. Millar will leave to-day by car to spend a few days at Wellington. Mrs. H. Davies will arrive to-day from Hastings on a visit to her mother, Mrs. R. J. Matthews. Mrs. Franklin White returned on Thursday evening from a short visit to Palmerston North. Mrs. Colin Strang is visiting Auckland. Mrs. B. Homer, Te Aroha, who has been visiting New Plymouth, -will return to-day. Mrs. A. J. Dixon, Wellington, is visiting New Plymouth and is a guest at the White Hart. Mrs. H. P. Gray has returned from a holiday at Thames. Mrs. Charles Willis will arrive to-day from Wanganui to spend a few days with Mrs. Richard Cock. Mrs. O. Wood, Hawera, is the guest of Mrs. G. Rich. Mrs. M. J. Armstrong returned from a holiday visit to Wanganui on Thursday. Mrs. J. Morton, Auckland, is the guesi of Mrs. C. Webster. Mrs. E. Griffiths was hostess at a very enjoyable afternoon party on Thursday. Miss Oldridge, Wanganui, is the guest of Mrs. T. L. Aylward, Dorset Avenue. Mrs. R. Self, who has been visiting Mrs. D. McAllum, will return to Wellington to-day. Miss Margaret Thomas has left on a visit to Feilding. Mrs. F. Walton returned last night from Wellington. Mrs. P. Leslie was hostess at bridge on Wednesday evening. Miss Mary Thomson and Miss Jean Smith are spending a few days at Wanganui. Mrs. H. Greig and Miss Alison Greig have returned from Wellington. Mrs. O. Samuel has returned from Palmerston North and Wellington. Mrs. D. McAllum entertained during the week at an afternoon party for Mrs. Self, Wellington, and Mrs. B. Chaney, Auckland. Mrs. L. A. Nolan entertained at bridge on Wednesday evening. Mrs. A. L. Griffiths returned last night from a visit to Blenheim. Miss J. Mackay was hostess at a bridge tea yesterday afternoon. . Mrs. J. N. Stephenson, Opunake, is visiting New Plymouth. Miss K. Campbell will return to Auckland to-morrow. Mrs. W. H. Hawkins and Miss Betty Hawkins will return to-day from a holiday at. Wellington. Mrs. Maurice Waterson, Mohakatino, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. P. Keesing, Wellington. Miss Barbara Blackley is the guest of Miss Lindsey Scown, Hawera. Mrs. E. L. Humphries entertained on Monday afternoon in honour of Mrs. R. Self, Wellington, and Mrs. B. Chaney, Auckland. Miss Mary Downs has arrived from Havelock North to spend the vacation at New Plymouth. A very enjoyable evening was spent on Wednesday at the home of Mrs. F. S. Grayling, when members of the Waiwaka Tennis Club organised a bridge drive. As a result of almost 50 players taking part the club funds have benefited considerably. The prize-winners were Miss May Smart and Mr. Gorrie. Among the guests at the Criterion this week have been Mrs. F. C. Gray and Miss E. Sutherland (Masterton), Mrs. J. R. Kellems, Mrs. G. Toleclans and Miss Yvonne Enriquez (Los Angeles), Mrs. Tingey, Mrs. Horr (Wanganui), Mrs. N. Park, Mrs. Brodley (Wellington), Miss O. Lyon (London), Mrs. C. A. Davis (Palmerston North). Guests staying at the White Hart include Mrs. Dallimore (Auckland), Mrs. W. Glenn (Wanganui) and Mrs. M Tosswell (Wanganui). Miss Bobbie Carthew was again guesi of honour this week at a “gift” party given by Mrs. Nisbet D. Smith on Thursday afternoon. Bowls of daffodils and freesias filled the room and the guests spent a very happy time playing bridge. The winner was Miss Catherine Moyes. Following afternoon tea Miss Carthew, who was wearing a smart frock of cream pin-stripe velvet with lacings of black at the neck and on the sleeves and matching velvet hat, opened many gifts, assisted by her hostess, who wore a frock of peony pink flat-crepe.

VICTORIA LEAGUE. NEW PLYMOUTH ACTIVITIES. News has been received through the Victoria League, London, of the safe arrival in England of Miss Hilda Chandler, who is going to the nurses’ conference at Brussels. When the last mail left Miss Chandler was thoroughly enjoying doing the sights of London. The members of the Fitzroy Croquet Club will be hostesses at the floral tea at the Victoria League rooms on Friday next. A very enjoyable programme is being arranged. MOTUROA GUILD ENTERTAINMENT. The Moturoa ladies’ guild held a successful “bring and buy” afternoon. The flag five hundred was also well patronised. At the winning table were Mesdames Chong (2) and Mr. and Mrs. Looney. The cake donated by the Egmont Bakery was won by David Fluker and the handkerchief sachet by Mrs. Spray. W.C.T.U. AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. held at St. Andrew’s Hall, New Plymouth, on Wednesday, took the form of a social. Miss Drew, M.A., presided over a good attendance. An address was given by Mrs. O. Blundell on character building. The speaker enforced the need of service before self and practice of the golden rule The aftermath of war was responsible for much of the present woeful condition of the world, but she deplored the absence of home life and of an atmosphere that fostered the best in growing youth Thoughts, Mrs. Blundell said, could be constructive as well as destructive.
