ELTHAM ITEMS

Mrs. A. Chrystal was hostess at an afternoon tea on Wednesday afternoon. Those present were Mesdames Weir, E. Wilson, Simm, R. Darling, M. Jardine and Mrs. J. Rybum. Mrs. J, B. Brown was a hostess at bridge during the week. Mrs. Moore and Miss E. Wanklyn, Foxton, are the guests of Mrs. H. Wills. Mrs. E. Penwarden, New Plymouth, is the guest of Miss I. Bleakley, Rawhitiroa. Mrs. Stephens, Fitzroy, is visiting Eltham. The Misses Wilson were hostesses at bridge on Monday evening. Mrs. J. Best has returned from a visit to New Plymouth. Mrs. Goldsmith was hostess at tea on Tuesday afternoon. Miss J. Welch has returned from Wellington. Mrs. Langston was hostess at tea on Wednesday. Those present were Mesdames Stephens (Fitzroy), Best, Mann, Higgins and C. A. Belcher. Mrs. C. C. Stanners has returned from New Plymouth. Mrs. R. Dyson, Timaru, is the guest of Mrs. Turner, “The Grange.” Miss Hobbs, New Plymouth, was the guest of Mrs. W. Wilson during the week. Mrs. C. A. Wilkinson is spending a holiday at Pukearuhe. Mrs. J. H. Morton has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Dallinger, Mangamingi, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs. H. Turner, Mangamingi, has returned from a holiday in the South Island. To mark her services to the community, Mrs. L. R. Reakes was entertained at afternoon tea by members of the Eltham home nursing class and members of the Red Cross Society. Miss Peters made a presentation to Mrs. Reakes on behalf of the class. Appreciation of •Mrs. Reakes’ services to both institutions was expressed by the Mayor (Mr. I. J. Bridger), Sister Small, Hawera, and Mrs. King, secretary of the South Taranaki centre of the Red Cross Society.

GIFT EVENING AT URUTI.

A “gift evening” for Miss Elsie Ayton, who is to be married to Mr. G. Stevens, was held in the Uruti hall recently. There was a large attendance and ample evidence of the popularity of Miss Ayton and Mr. Stevens. Numerous gifts were received. Mr. S. S. Butt spoke in congratulatory terms and referred to Miss Ayton’s popularity in the district. An excellent musical programme was presented. Miss Patti Tonkin sang a solo, Miss Tonkin and Mr. J. Tonkin a duet and the Rev. Skuse and Mr. Lange songs. Accompaniments were played by Mr. Colin Campbell, New Plymouth, and Mr. R. Murray, Uruti. Music for the dancing was provided by Mrs. E. A. Jones and Mr. J. Bell.
