WHO ARE THE LEGION?

(To the Editor). Sir, —“Curious,” of Mokoia, would have unconsciously answered his ovm question in the body of his letter of inquiry if he had written, instead of “party,” “a movement that will work for the good of all and not a select few.” For that is the fundamental objective of the Legion. “Party” is, on its own label, a select portion of the community, and the aim of the Legion is to eliminate or submerge such sections as political parties in the larger and more wholesome consideration of what is best for the Dominionwide community, particularly including those who need the greatest consideration, the wage-earners and the unemployed. The Legion is making excellent progress, but is not sufficiently organised in any one electorate as yet to exert a decisive influence. Wherefore, as far as I know, it will not be taking any active part in the forthcoming Lyttelton byelection, but it will have an influence in the larger issue of the next general election when it comes, and when the aim and scope of the Legion movement will be more widely appreciated and understood. For the Legion is emphatically not an organisation of or for the select few, but an organisation into which every elector, both man and woman, is welcome who has sufficient spirit of unselfishness or of self-sacrifice to consider what is best for the community at large, rather than what is best for any one section, party or electorate.—l am, etc., GEORGE HOME. New Plymouth, September 1.
