TOURISTS WIN BASKETBALL

VISITING WELLINGTON TEAM. WAITARA OVERWHELMED 28' TO 4. ~ There Was - really- good - play in the . basketball match played at Waitara yesterday between Wellington and Wai-, tara representative teams. Wellington won by 28 goals to 4. The newly-formed Waitara club put up a good performance, , but could, not be expected' to hold the , more experienced visitors. The teams were:— . / Wellington: Misses M..;Akel, W. King, M. Prosser, L Palmer, Roren, L. Reeves, J. Sharp, Rogers, Sturrock. Waitara: Misses J- Bristol, M. Old, R. Robson,. Low, Johnstone, J. McNeil, Z. Bristol, I. Tonner, P. Young. Wellington made an excellent beginning, and although Waitara’s defence put up a great fight the Wellington goalies proved too swift for them. The Waitara forwards lost many attempts at goal by passing around instead of towards the goal. Wellington was first to score, but Waitara passed out well from the throwoff at centre and in a few minutes Miss Bristol threw a clear goal for Waitara, making the score 1 all. Pretty passing by Wellington beat the Waitara defence and points were added in quick succession, making the halftime score Wellington 15, Waitara 2. Waitara played a very willing game. Wellington from its throw-off scored without Waitara handling the ball • ,ut once more Waitara retaliated and Miss Old shot a good goal. 1 1 1 For some time neither side had the advantage; there was some scrambling .*nd the ball went out a good deal. For a few minutes Wellington forwards went off, and the ball was pn the ground, hut V. King at last secured and shot a beautiful goal from several yards away. Waitara from the throw-off had a clear run and Miss . Bristol scored neatly. Miss Sturrock in defence did excellent intercepting work for Wellington. Waitara seldom kept the advantage ,of the. throw-off in the centre. after Wellington goaled. Again Wellington forwards completely overpowered the Waitara de-, fence and scoring was frequent, points mounting. Wellington defenders used their arms in blocking more than is gen- ; erally considered allowable in Taranaki. Those who scored for Wellington were' Misses M. Prosser (10), M. Akel (8) and V. King (10), while those for Waitara were Misses J. Bristol (3) ■ and M. Old a). ■ ■ • ■
