BETTER TONE OF MARKET

BUTTEIR ADVANCES IN PRICE HIGHEST FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. INDICATIONS OF UPWARD TREND. An optimistic tone is revealed in reports on the London dairy produce markets in' cables received yesterday. Not only have prices for butter recovered from the slight fall that occurred toward the end of last week but also they have gained ground a little, while the forecasts are for a continued upward trend. The highest quotation made for finest New Zealand butter yesterday was 935, which is two shillings higher than at the same time last week and the highest point reached since the low levels of a few months ago. Cheese prices remain about the same as a week ago but the market is firmer than it was. The following cable advices, in which the prices. for last week are given in parentheses, were received yesterday:— Press Association: Butter is active. Quotations: Danish, 107 s to 108 s; New Zealand choicest salted, 92s to 935; unsalted, 92s to 945; Australian ,■ choicest salted, 91s to 925; unsalted, 91s to 925. Cheese is slow. Quotations: New Zealand white 47s 6d, coloured 50s. Mr. E. Griffiths (A. J. Mills and Co. Ltd.): The butter market is firm;. New Zealand finest, 92s to 93s (90s to 91s); New Zealand firsts, 90s to 91s (89s to 90s); New Zealand unsalted, 94s to 96s (92s to 945); Danish f.0,b., 105 s, 106 s (104 s 105 s); Australian, 91s to 92s (89s to 91s). The cheese market is quiet; New Zealand white, 47s 6d to 48s (47s 6d to 48s); New Zealand coloured, 50s to 51s (51s to 51s 6d); Canadian c.i.f., 47s to 49s (49s to 50s). Newton King Ltd. (R. and W. Davidson Ltd.): The butter market has advanced 2s per cwt. since last Friday and closes firm, with an upward tendency; salted, 91s to 93s (89s to 91s); unsalted, 94s to 96s (92s to 945). The cheese market is about on a level with last week’s prices, and closes firmer; white,< 47s 6d (47s to 48s); coloured, 50s 6d (51s). New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited (dated August 30):—Butter: New Zealand choicest salted, 92s per cwt. (91s); market firm. Cheese: White, 47s 6d, 48s per cwt. (47s to 48s); coloured, 50s to 51s per cwt. “(51s); very slow. Henry A. Lane and Co. Ltd: New Zealand cheese: White 47s 6d, coloured 50s 6d; market steadier.
