NEW ZEALAND WINS CUP
MELBOURNE GOLF CONTEST PLAYERS SUFFER ILLNESSES. ONE OF FOURSOMES NOT PLAYED. VICTORY ON THE COUNT BACK. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. Melbourne, Sept. 1. The New Zealand team of four lady golfers won the Tasman Cup from Australia to-day, but one of the foursomes matches was won by default. The teams were not selected until the last moment owing to the illness of prominent players., Mrs. Templer (New Zealand) played though she was far from fit. In the singles Miss- Susie Tolhurst lost to Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) one up; Miss O. Lefebvre defeated Miss Betty Gaisford (New Zealand) one up; Miss MacLeod defeated Mrs. Dodshun (New Zealand) three and two; Miss J, Hood Hammond defeated Mrs. Templer (New Zealand) four and two. Australia won three games and six points and New Zealand one game and two points. Miss Tolhurst was three down to Miss Kay after ten holes, but three in a row made her square at the. fifteenth. Miss Kay won on the last green. Miss Lefebvre was three down at the turn but put up a great fight to defeat Miss Gaisford on the last green. The approximate figures were Miss Kay 79, Miss Tolhurst 81.
The foursomes in the afternoon were sensation, as Misses Tolhurst, MacLeod and Hammond were compelled to withdraw owing to illness. Miss Kay and Miss Gaisford defeated Miss Lefebvre and Mrs. Russell two and one in the only foursome played, making the totals three matches all. On the count back of the holes Australia had eight holes in the singles and New Zealand one hole; New Zealand had twelve in the foursomes (one walkover counting ten and eight), New Zealand thus won the Tasman Cup.
