The annual report o£ the president of the Pukekura Park Tennis ' Club to bpresented to the annual meeting on September 12 records 'a very successful seaS °ln presenting the report for 4he year ending August 31, 1933, thnpresident congratulated the club on. its- standard of play and also on its sound financial position. It is expedient, the report says, that the club should purstie a sound financial policy , and in_ this respect the funds have been well cared? for. At the . beginning of the season, the club commenced with a credit of £3B 6s; lid, and after expending a total of £124 9s 6d the balance was increased to ivs 10d. This achievement, particularly m view of the economic conditions, is a worthy compliment to the clubs administration. The main items of expenditure, shown in detail to the bal-ance-sheet, include balls £3B 7s, and topdresSing of courts £l6. The item topdressing of courts will be recurring, as in accordance with the resolutions- of the committee it has been decided to topdress two courts each season. This year Nos. 1 and. 4. will be treated. The winners of the various events; to the club tournament, which was exceedingly well patronised, were: Championships: Mens singles, Mr. L. H. Des Forges; ladies’ singles, Miss J. Walton; men’s doubles, Messrs. C. Little and ■W. Shrimpton; ladies doubles, Misses G. Baunton and P. Walton; combined doubles, Mr. W. Shrimpton and Mrs. .Shrimpton. _ Handicaps: Men’s singles, Mr. A. Jenkins; ! ladies’ singles, Miss G. Baunton, men’s doubles, Messrs. H. Peel and J, ' Hutchinson; ladies doubles, Misses . Medley and D. Pepper; doubles, Mr. W. Shrimpton and Miss D. At the association tournament Miss Winnie Webster won the handicap singles. The club lent its courts to the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association for use in the junior tournament, and although -the club’s junior members who participated were not placed, they no, doubt profited by their experience. On the North Taranaki ranking ladder the club is represented by. Messrs. C, H- P es Forges (second place), C. Little (eighth), W I- Shrimpton (ninth), T. Dickson (eleventh), D. A. Smith (thirteenth), Misses J. S. Walton, (fifth), G. Baunton (ninth). In the. North v. South match, the club was represented by. Miss J. Walton and Mr. C. H. Des Forges. In--terest was particularly wellmaintained in the club’;, ladder competition, a total , of 136 matches being; played during-the In the Soffe Cup competition the A team (winners of the cup.for the 19M-aZ season) this season defeated Waiwaka, Waitara and Rotpkare, but lost. the., cup to New Plymouth. The . match with Inglewood was abandoned owing to rain. In conjunction with the Soffe Cup matches the B; .teams from New_ P y-, mouth, Rotokare and .Waitara. played,, Park winning all three .matches Friend--ly matches were played with Stratford, Tongaporutu, Rawhiti, Oaonui, Ballance Street and Boys’ High School. Several of these matches were arranged with the object of giving games to those players not. in the A and B teams. It is hoped that still further efforts will be made in this direction during the coming season. . . The total membership of the club is 61 playing members. This is exactly the <;ame as the previous season. As in the pS the annual dance was held. Unfortunately the weather was very inclement and although the attendance was not as large as at previous functions, those present had a very enjoyable evening. Members attended in force at a combined dance arranged by the Soffe Cup committee. This was the first of its kind and proved a great success. The club combined with the New Plymouth club to run a bridge evening in aid of the relief of unemployed. This produced a profit of over £6. During the season several progressive and Yankee tournaments were held. The necessity of a new pavilion has been' apparent to members for soma years. With the assistance of the croquet club a new building will be available at the opening of the coming season, and will no doubt meet the requirements of the club for many years. Thanks are due to Messrs. Cook and Lister for donations of trophies, the ladies’ committee for attention to the afternoon tea, to the Press to the auditor (Mr. A. Jenkins), and generally- to all the committees and individual members for their loyal and willing assistance.
