FIVE MEN BEFORE COURT. VARYING SENTENCES IMPOSED., By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The theft of £l5O worth of jewellery from a house at Killinchy was the basis of the main charge against five men today. There are 39 charges in all, some alleging burglary, theft and receiving stolen property. The youngest of the accused, whose name was suppressed, was changed with receiving only, and he altered his plea to one of guilty. The charges against him were adjourned for 12 months, and he was ordered to make restitution of £3 10s. , , J . ' Kenneth Joyce Murray pleaded guilty to ten charges of theft of goods and bicycles and two charges of wilfully damaging slot telephones. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering by day the dwelling of Mary Agnes Nixon at Killinchy. Murray and Albert Edward Johns were charged with breaking and entering the house of E. G. Kerswell and committing theft. Murray was committed to the Supreme. Court for sentence and Johns for trial on this Charles Mitchell Newman pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of goods and a bicycle and not guilty to receiving from Murray. Johns pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a bicycle, and was convicted also of receiving stolen goods from Murray. Lester Palmer Irving pleaded guilty to receiving a bicycle and goods. Percy John Irving was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence for breaking and entering at Killinchy. Both pleaded guilty to receiving a stolen bicycle from Murray. Referring to the summary charges, Chief-Detective Dunlop said Johns and Murray were apparently at the head of the business, and the others had apparently been brought under their influence. On the summary charges the accused were sentenced as follows: Lester Irving and Percy Irving, one month’s hard labour; Newman, six months’ hard labour; Murray, six months’ hard labour; Johns, three months’ hard labour, to be followed by 18 months’ reformative detention.
