WELLINGTON RUGBY WIN

DEFEAT OF SOUTHLAND WINNER'S BACKS TOO FAST. SCORING IN SECOND HALF. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The touring Southland Rugby team was defeated by Wellington at Athletic Park to-day by 38 points to 11. The game was very evenly contested in the first spell, when the visit..u played with a strong wind and a bright sun behind, but once Wellington had these conditions in its favour it opened up play and with backs and forwards combining in fast passing rushes ran the southerners off their legs and notched a comfortable margin of points. Southland fought doggedly, the forwards particularly playing an honest game, but the team was not equal to the class of the victor. Southland’s reputation for good forward play was thoroughly maintained. The forwards set Wellington a task greater than any the home side has had to answer this season, but tactical superiority, proved a strong factor in Wellington’s favour. Wellington was content to play Southland more or less at its own game in the first spell, which ended with the scores three-all, but after turning round Wellington commenced to develop its characteristic type of open game and from the interval there was really only one team in it. Southland saw sufficient of the ball to have held its own with Wellington, but its movements lacked design and finish, while its handling was poor. In the second spell with Wellington calling the tune Southland’s defence fell away and as well as being outgeneralled the team was outmanoeuvred by the speed of the Wellington backs. Berry scored the opening try for Southland but Killeen soon equalised for Wellington, outpacing the Southland defence after Lilbume had short-punted with a positional kick. There was no further scoring until the second spell, when Killeen again showed exceptional speed to beat the Southland backs in a race for the ball. Fuller goaled. Fuller then rounded off a Wellington passing movement by scoring and converting. Tries were added in quick succession by Dellabarca and Robins, Fuller converting both. Kilby then opened up a good movement for Dellabarca to score again, and Reid touched down from a forward rush, Fuller converting both tries. Sharp kicked a penalty for Southland, which Robins followed with a good try in the corner after all the Wellington backs had handled. Fuller again converted. The final try went to Southland when a penalty kick by Sharpe hit an upright and rebounded into play and George touched down in a handy position, Sharpe converting. Morgan kicked a magnificent goal and Wanganui led by 11 to nil. <Manawatu began to awake and made tast rushes without breaking through. Eventually Waldin led a charge and scored near the posts. H. Ormond goaled. On the call of half-time Briscoe, following his own punt, received the ball, the bounce of which beat McKay, and scored a gift try. Morgan goaled and Wanganui led by 16 to 5. Manawatu began smartly in the second spell. The backs secured and handled with precision. Bramwell drew the opposition and sent Bradley over to score a good try which H. Ormond failed to convert.
