CATTLE IMPORTATION
REMOVAL OF EMBARGO FAVOURED. CHANGE IN ATTITUDE. Palmerston N., Aug. 15. By 24 votes to 5 the general committee , of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association passed a resolution this morning favouring the removal of the embargo against the importation of live stock from Great Britain. The matter had previously been before the committee, but had been lost on each occasion. The resolution was moved by Dr. E. C. Barnett, who said he had no personal interest in the removal of the embargo. What he had seen in New Zealand and in his travels in England had brought him to the conclusion that it was imperative that the embargo should be lifted. In his opinion there was little danger of the importation of the disease through stock, the greatest danger being from other- avenues, including straw and packing from the Continent. The motion was seconded by Mr. J. Knight.
Mr. W. G. Black said British stock was now being imported to the Dominion by a round-about way through Canada and Australia.
Mr. J. A. Mitchell said the removal of the embargo had previously been discussed by the and had been unanimously turned down., He did not think that there would be a breeder in the country who would gain by the removal. It was only petty jealousy on the part of breeders that made them so anxious to obtain foreign stock. Mr. T. R. Hodder said the Governor-
General in a recent speech had said New Zealand breeders were standing in their own light in prohibiting the importation of British stock. The chairman, Mi-. D. Buchanan, said he was in favour of the removal of the embargo. The trouble in England had been caused by the exportation of straw and other garbage from the Continent. He would most emphatically say that breeders needed to import new blood if they wished to keep their stock true to type.
