WANGANUI’S RECOVERY HAWKE’S BAY BEATEN 21 TO 17. TRIUMPH IN SECOND SPELL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. Wanganui defeated Hawke’s Bay today by 21 to 17 in a bright display of Rugby. Up to half-time it seemed that the visitors would definitely outclass the home fifteen, but nobody was prepared for the change that came over the Wanganui forwards in the second spell. Crushing the visiting van enabled Wanganui to play the backs into action with some purpose and thereafter the game was a triumph for Jack Morgan, Brogden, Bullock-Douglas and ChaseThe improvement gained and the zeal of the forwards inspired the team as a whole and victory by perhaps a little greater margin was really deserved. Hawke’s Bay fielded a team that was said to be as good as Bay has turned out for five years. In the forwards Henderson was probably the outstanding man, with Steere, the All Black, as good as ever. Ireland also played well. In the backs the pick was Williams, who should be prominent in New Zealand Rugby this year. Grant at centre was also good but the greatest honours on the day Were earned by the full-back Varton.

All the Wanganui forwards .played well, the outstanding members of the pack being Mclntyre, Fowler, Waters and Lockett. Morgan was the star back on the field. Brogden came into his own in the second spell. Bullock-Douglas scored his inevitable try, two of them in fact. Chase gave the impression that he is all right. Tries for Hawke’s Bay were scored by Grant, Ireland and Smith; Grant and Bradley converted a try each and Varton potted a goal. For Wanganui Lockett, Bullock-Douglas (2) and Brogden scored tries. Morgan converted three and kicked a penalty. Mr. E. McKenzie, North Island selector, was present.

VICTORY FOR SOUTHLAND SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATEN. x TWENTY-FOUR TO ELEVEN. Timaru, Last Night. En route to Christchurch to play Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield Lie Southland Rugby representatives broke their journey at Timaru and to-day defeated South Canterbury by 24 to 11. The big Southland forwards shone at short passing while the tackling of the side was a feature. Southland saw more of the ball in the line-outs and scrums and its very strong loose rushes were very difficult to stop. The visiting back line was minus four who are expected to participate in the shield match and was not so impressive as was expected. Tries were scored by the visitors by Bruce (2), Frampton, Mitchell, Purdue and Southern, Porter converting two tries and Sharp one. Adkins secured three tries for South Canterbury, Duke converting one. ... KING COUNTRY WINS EASILY. TOKERAU MAORIS DEFEATED. . , Taumarunui, Last Night. King Country defeated Tokerau, a Maori team, by twenty-one to three in a fast and open game to-day. The King Country backs were superior and the forwards had the upper hand ,in the loose. For King Country tries were scored by Trust, Galbraith, Gilbert and Clemett. McLeod converted one try, Lawler kicked a penalty goal and Gilbert potted a goal. For Tokerau White kicked a penalty. MARLBOROUGH BEATS ASHBURTON Ashburton, Last Night. Marlborough beat Ashburton by 20 to six in a fairly fast, open game to-day. The teams were well matched in .the. first spell but the visiting backs were superior in the second. The scores at half-time were eight to six, Marlborough having a try scored by Oldham and converted by Lane, and a penalty by Lane, and Ashburton tries by Bradford and Davison. Ashburton forwards played pluckily in the second half, being unfortunate in not scoring once or twice. The Marlborough backs improved in passing and the local men were unequal to the demand. The Marlborough score was increased by tries by H. Phillips (2), and Lane, and a penalty by McDonald. THIRD GRADE REPRESENTATIVES..
