SUCCESS OF MANGOREI FARMERS. FIELD COMPETITIONS TROPHIES. The presentation of prizes won by members of the Mangorei branch of the. Farmers’ Union in the field competitions was made at a dance at the Mangorei hall on Tuesday night. The dance was well attended and the prizes were presented by Mr. H. E. Blyde, president of the North Taranaki executive of the union. During the supper interval Mr. A. W. Busing, president of the branch, extended a welcome to the visitors and particularly to Mr. Blyde. He apologised for the absence of Mr. J. M. Smith, of the Department of Agriculture, and Mr. D. le C. Morgan. Mr. Busing expressed pleasure at the increased entry in the competitions in the Mangorei district and said it was very noticeable to those who went around with the judge that the quality of the entries showed a decided improvement. The competitions therefore were undoubtedly of great educational value. The experience of Mangorei was that of other districts that the competitions had come to stay, and he was con-

fident would prove of increasing value to the farmers of North Taranaki. ' Mr. Blyde congratulated the district oii the increased entries and the general Improvements manifest in the ..hay and silage and also root crops. This was a particularly gratifying feature and was noticeable in all districts. Mangorei had not been taking active part in the competitions so long as some districts but had done remarkably well. The points indicated that the quality was uniform and the winners in the different sections were only two or three points below those gaining championship honours. The improvement in the quality of fodder grown on the farms resulted in better feeding of the stock and consequently increased production without any material increase in costs. . Referring to the prizes to be presented to first prize winners, Mr. Blyde congratulated the district on its initiative in this connection. For instance, Messrs. Shepherd and Jamieson, who won the stack silage and hay competitions, were the recipients of an arm chair, and Mr. A. O. Wells, who won the pit silage class, received an oak dinner wagon. Government certificates were also presented to these competitors and to those gaining second and third places in ear 1 * class. \

The prize-winners were: — Stack silage: Shepherd and Jamieson I, J. D. Pearce 2, G. T. Mace 3. Earth pit silage: A. O. Wells 1, H. H. Olson 2, M. Rogers 3. Hay: Shepherd and Jamieson J, F. Morris 2, H. H. Olson 3. Supper was served by the ladies unde? the presidency of Mrs. Busing. The dance programme consisted of oldtime and modem dances and a noticeable feature was the growing popularity of •the old-time numbers. The music was provided by Messrs..Boulton- and Ibbetson, extras being played by Mr. and Messrs. J. Johnson and R. Nielson ably performed the duties of masters of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo dance- wai won by Miss Nielson, and Mr, B. Nielson, Songs were .rendered by Mrs. J. D. Pearce.
