JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONS
TOKAORA MEN’S TEAM HONOURED. SUCCESS TWICE IN TWO SEASONS. The Tokaora men’s hockey team, winner of the Taranaki junior championship for the past two years, was entertained by residents of the district on Tuesday night at a banquet and dance. The club has been in existence only two years, and in that period has lost only two games. There was a good attendance at the function, which was arranged by committees headed by Mrs. Jennings and Mr. S. Thrush, with Mr. J. V. McMahon as secretary. Mr. Thrush presided over the gathering, and among those present was Mr. J. E. Campbell, Mayor of Hawera.
The following toast list was honoured: “Taranaki Hockey Association” (Mr. E. Tippett—Mr. C. J. McFadyen); “Tokaora Men’s Tteam” (Mr. S. Thush—Messrs. T. Brombley and A. Taplin); “Runner-up, Mangatoki” (Mr. H. E. Johnson—Mr. A. Schicker); “Tokaora Ladies’ Team” Mr. W. Standish—Misses P. Bollard and R. Barr); “Referees” (Mr. H. Wren—Mr. W. J. Shepperd); “Owner of the Field” (Mr. T. Bromley—Mr. V. Mills); “Ladies” (Mr. J. V. McMahon—Mr. S. Thrush). . Community singing was led by Mr. C. J. McFadyen, and music for the dance was played by Mr. G. Smith. Congratulations were extended by several speakers. Mr. McFadyen referred to the good performance in the final, and suggested that next year Tokaora might play senior. In that case the members would have to train and concentrate on positional play. Mr. Thrush referred to the spirit in which the team played the game for the game’s sake. If the team did play senior he hoped that spirit would be maintained. Mr. T. Brombley, captain of the team, said he doubted whether it could have been so successful without the support of the residents of the . district. He .thanked those responsible for the function for the honour done the team.
