HAWERA CRIMINAL CASES

UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY ARREARS CYCLES LIGHTLESS AT NIGHTS. H. E. White, Normanby, brought before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., at Hawera yesterday, was fined £2 and costs 10s for failure to pay the unemployment levy. For the Department of Labour it was explained that White’s application for exemption had not been granted, and that he had been fined for the same offence in 1931, since when he had paid no instalments of the levy. Four cyclists were fined for riding without lights at night. Harry Wills and Ben Flintoff were each mulcted in the sum of 10s with 10s costs. Allan and Wallace Kennedy were fined £1 with costs 10s. Alexander M. Brown was ordered to pay costs 10s for permitting his chimney to catch on fire. Rangihura Robinson was fined 5s with costs 15s because his child did not attend school from July 3 to July 4.

The annual meeting of the Hawera Methodist Women’s Missionary Union was held on Tuesday. Mrs. L. J. Williams presided over a good attendance. Birthday greetings were given to Mrs. Lister, 86 years of age, Mrs. Patten, 76, and Mrs. A. Barley 83. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Hey. in her present illness. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mrs. L. J. Williams; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Hill, Tozer, Bates and Yearbury; secretary, Miss Bates; treasurer, Mrs. F. Rae; Press reporter, Mrs. E. Yearbury; representative to quarterly meeting, Mrs. Barkla; auditor, Mr. W. Crompton; sick visiting, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Bates. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies and the meeting closed with the Benediction. HAWERA COURT SITTING. UNDEFENDED CIVIL ACTIONS. Judgment by default was given in the Hawera Court yesterday by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the following cases:— A. H. Shaw v. R. Shepherd, £3 17s 6d (costs £1 8s 6d); C. Lansdown v. F. G. McAllister, £5 (£1 3s 6d); Kaupokonui Dairy Co. Ltd. v. G. White jun., £1 15s 3d (8s); Blairs Ltd. v. George Rowson, £5 16s 3d (£1 Hs 6d). On judgment summonses the following orders were made: —W. Hamilton to pay Paramount Tyre Service £ll (£1 Is), in default 11 days’ imprisonment, the warrant io be suspended so long as debtor pays £1 per month; W. H. Lacey to pay Spragg and Son Ltd. £5 9s 6d (15s 6d) in default six days’ imprisonment; C. J. Wiley to pay Harrops Ltd. £lO 2s 6d (£1 Is), in default 10 days’ imprisonment. WAVERLEY BIBLE CLASS SOCIAL. PRESENTATION TO LEADER. A pleasant social evening was given at Waverley on Monday night by the members of St. Andrew’s Bible class in honour of Mr. J. R. Catanach, who has recently retired from active service in the Bible classes and Sunday school after many years’ work. The occasion was also the 25th anniversary of the class. Members of the Hawera Bible classes were present, as well as many other friends, including the Rev. and Mrs. Mclvor, Marton. A fine musical programme was presented as follows: Pianoforte recital, Miss Shea.man, “Military Polonaise” (Chopin), “Nocturne in F Sharp” (Chopin); songs, Mr. A. Cowie, “The Thrush, “Come to the Fair”; song, Miss Beer, “Home, Sweet Home”; pianoforte recital, Mr. Row, Hawera; song, Miss Trotter, Hawera, “Where the Heather Blooms”; recitation, Miss Whitlock, Hawera; song, Miss Rawson, Hawera. Miss Trotter, Hawera, presented Mr. Catanach with the long service medal, saying that she felt it was a privilege and a pleasure to do so since it denoted so many years of service. Mr. J. McKee, Hawera, endorsed all that Miss Trotter had said. Mr. W. Taylor (present leader), Mr. McGregor, Mr. J. Currie and Mr. Mclvor also spoke and were unanimous in praising Mr. Catena ch’s work. The Rev. H. C. Stuart, on behalf of the present members of the Bible class, presented Mr. Catanach with an easy chair. Mrs. Catanach received a bouquet of spring flowers from little Kathleen Stuart. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to all those who had helped to make the , evening a success. Supper was served. l
