OHURA DISTRICT NOTES

PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Misses Goldfinch and Curran, Ohakune, are the guests of Miss K. Goldfinch. Mrs. A. J. Wills is visiting Palmerston North. Mr. Duncan Mackay, Taranaki schools agricultural instructor, has been visiting the Ohura schools. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall and family have arrived to settle at Ohura and Mr. Marshall has been transferred from Taumarunui to take up the mastership of the Ohura High School. Mr. N. J. B. Dougherty has returned from a visit to Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. P. Jorgensen have returned to make their home at Ohura. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Jennings and family, Waitaanga, have left this district to reside at Wanganui. The death lias occurred of Mr. Peter Brennan, who was one of the old identities of the district. He died in the Wellington hospital. Mrs. G. J. Leach is. visiting her mother, Mrs. J. L. Robinson. The social dub of the Oddfellows’ Lodge had a very successful euchre drive last week, and funds collected were handed over to the newly formed Rebecca Lodge. Prizes were won by Mrs. T. Worthington and Mr. Soorban, while the consolation prizes went to Mrs. T. Wills and Mr. N. Roberts. Mr. Millen has returned from an extended holiday in Australia and North Auckland. Mrs. W. T. McKay has returned from a holiday at Opunake and Wellington. Miss Allen is visiting New Plymouth, where she is the guest of Mrs. J. W. Logan. »

The Oddfellows’ ladies committee held a “hard-up” dance in the town hall on Friday night. Amongst those present were Mesdames Geange, Gould, Perini, Gee, La Hood, Smith, Harley, McHarrie (2), Davidson, Power, Hunt, Wagstaff, Craven, Boisen, Hibberd, Ralph, Fretwell, Woodney, Wills, Parsons, Misses Geange, Davidson, Wills, Henderson, B. Clark, Wagstaff, Goldfinch, E. Koorey, Cranen, Duggan, Wakeford, Borthwick (2), McHarrie, V. Smith, Harley, Williams, Goldfinch and Curran (Okahune), Ryan, Weinberg (2) and Christiansen (Matiere). Prizes for the best “hardup” dress were won by Mrs. Hunt and Mr. Wolfsbower, the Monte Carlo by Miss A. Davidson and Mr. N. Wagstaff and the balloon dance by Miss Weinberg and Mr. C. Weinberg. The winner cf the doll was Mr. Meredith. St. Andrew’s Anglican Guild held its weekly juvenile dancing class, a large number of boys and girls attending. Those assisting were Mesdames Gee, Gould, Brown, Jenks, Allen, Corban, Misses Butcher and Wagstaff. Music was supplied by Mrs. Corban and Miss Butcher. Supper was supplied by ladies’ committee and the Rev. Marks was master of ceremonies.

A well patronised excursion train went from Ohura on Saturday to Taumarunui, where an inter-provincial football match was played between Waikato and King Country, the former winning by 6 points to 5. Great interest is being aroused in the King Country in the forthcoming visit of the Canterbury team. Mrs. Allen entertained at an afternoon on Friday in honour of Mrs. C. Quintall, who is leaving Ohura to take up her residence at Hamitlon. Mrs. D. McHardie was hostess at a party at her home, “Waitewhena,” Ohura, on Saturday, given in honour cf Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Quintal and Miss Topsy Quintal. Amongst those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. J. Cox, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Quintal, Mrs. Hogan, Misses Howie (2), Webber (2), Topsy Quintal and Messrs. W. and A. McClure. A very jolly evening was spent with cards and dancing. Musical items were given by Mrs. Hogan, Messrs. W. McClure, A. McClure and Roberts. After supper the host, Mr. D. McHardie, voiced the feelings of those present in expressing regret at the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Quintal and family. Mr. W. K. Williams also spoke. The Ohura Methodist Church held its monthly social in the town hall on Thursday evening. There was a record attendance. Mr. Marshall was master cf ceremonies. Games and limericks were enjoyed. Master Alec Stewart gave.a violin solo which was encored. The next item was a sketch entitled “Aunt Jemima’s Visit,” which caused great amusement. The characters were Jack Smiler (Mr. Woodhouse), Mary, his wife (Mrs. Brooks), Eliza, Mary’s maid (Miss Audrey Davidson), Aunt Jemima /Mr. Muggridge), Theresa, Aunt Jemimas maid (Miss Loris Wagstaff), Septimus Old Boys, Minister (Mr. W. McClure), Cabby (Mr. Bert Grear). All took thenparts well and gave a humorous entertainment. Everybody entered heartily into the community singing and Mr. W. McClure also sang a solo, and encore number. _ .. .. The ladies of the St. Andrew s Anglican guild held their monthly meeting on Friday afternoon in the ladies’ rest room. Amongst other business transacted they completed arrangements for the flower show to be held in September.
