TRANSPORT APPEALS

ROTORUA-HAMILTON ROUTE. CASE FOR THE RAILWAY. Rotorua, Aug. 14. • ? A sitting of the Transport Appeal; Board was held to-day at Rotorua, Mr. : Justice Frazer presiding. Appeals were lodged by K. Motor Services, Limited (Mr. H. M. Hampson), Newby’s Motors, Limited (Mr. .E. Roe), A. G. Sparks (Mr. R. Potter), New Zealand Newspapers, Limited (Mr..W. A. Carter), and the Railways Board (Mr. F. W. Aickin). K Motors Services, Limited; also appealed for reduction of fares on the Rotorua-Hamilton service from Ils 6d to 10s single and 22s 6d.to 19s return. The appeals were against decisions given by the No. 3 Licensing Authority at a sitting on June 12. Mr. Aickin said that some of the trips run by the appellants were in. direct opposition to the railways, especially in regard to the Rotorua expresses. K. Motors and Newby’s asked for a readjustment of trips and Sparks for, aj license, all on the Rotorua-Hamilton route. The reduction of fares" asked for by K Motors would be an attempt to attract passengers from the railways at lower fares. The license applied for by Sparks had been given to Newby’s, Limited.

Mr. Aickin considered that the travelling public was catered for by the railways, which had spent a great deal of money in bringing the passenger trains, especially the expresses, to Rotorua up-to-date. Mr. Aickin contended that if the motor services had to pay a proper share of the costs they could not operate. The car services were a luxury and should operate at luxury rates. The railways were proving that they were an essential service for passengers and parcels. “The service car is an uneconomic
