BOOTS AND RENT

PROBLEM OF UNEMPLOYED. MINISTER’S COMMENT. Palmerston North, July 17. The Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, was present at this after-’ noon’s meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board to receive representations regarding the issue of boots to women and children and the prevention of men in relief- camps from establishing residence in the hospital districts in which the camp might be established. The Minister said the Unemployment Board had not considered, extending the granting of boots to women and children. The board did not want to disturb the business community, and it was perhaps better to leave the suggestion alone. However, he would look into the matter. “I did not say that there was no difficulty being experienced regarding rent; I must have been misreported,” said the Minister when his attention was drawn to a report in an Auckland paper that he had remarked that he was unaware that

there was. such a difficulty. Later the Minister said, that no complaints could be made • regarding landlords who had met their tenants well. It would be too big an order to expect .the Government or the Unemployment Board to assist the unemployed with their rents. The' Unemployment Board did not accept responsibility for food, rent 6r clothing, but made contributions to the men. Before leaving the meeting the Minister promised to consider the matters brought under his notice.
