MANUTAHI DISTRICT NEWS

RIFLE CLUB DISBANDED. There has been a gradual increase in the interest shown in functions held in the Manutahi hall this year. This fact was noticeable at the euchre party held by' the hall committee on Wednesday evening. There was an increased attendance which resulted in a very pleasant evening. After a re-play Miss M. O’Sullivan won the ladies’ prize, and Mr. R. Harvie won the men’s. The ping-pong tables were kept busy both before and after the euchre, and Miss O’Sullivan provided music for the dancers. The recent match with Mokoia at pingpong has roused a good deal of local interest, and it is expected that there will be a large attendance at the return match a Manutahi next week. Wanganui Education Board workmen have been busy at the school during the A wood shed and a ■ porch over the junior classroom have been erected, and heaters installed in both rooms. This work; with other minor repairs that have been carried out, will do a great deal to improve the accommodation at the school. The painters will probably be in the district at an early date. Work on the roof of the main building revealed the remains of a shingle roof of earlier days. In spite of the apparent age of the buildings they are in a good state of preservation. i • t , The final marks in the boys and girls club competitions are now available. All marks but those for the charts, which are as follow, have been published previously. The possible mark is 40: A. Muggeridge 40, M. McQueen 38, R. Cornwall 37, M. Smart 37, R. Southcombe 37, J. Bills 37, R. Broadbent 36, M. Muggeridge 36, V. Gush 35, W. Hill 35, R. Penny 35, H. Amon 34 and E. Penny 33. Several boys from the local school journeyed to Patea on Saturday to play in a trial game to select a football team to represent the Patea district in a match against the Hawera district on Saturday next . . ~ nr A decision that the affairs of the Manutahi Rifle Club should be wound up and the club disbanded was arrived at on Saturday night, when the following members were present: Messrs A. B. Muggeridge * (chairman), G. P. Anderson (secretary), R. O. Schwass, M. Schwass, I. Brunton and C. Barclay. After a full discussion of the club’s affairs ana a review of the -finances, the following motions were passed unanimously: That all assets of the club be realised upon that Messrs. A. B. Muggeridge, C. Barclay and G. P. Anderson be appointed a committee to carry out the above; that the donors of the trophies belonging to the club be approached by Mr. A. B. Muggeridge asking for their authority to hand over the trophies to the Manutahi school committee for annual competition. The trophies referred to are the Lane Cup, presented through Mr. G. H. Buckeridge, of Hawera, and the G. P. Anderson belt, presented by the present secretary. Both trophies are of considerable value, and it was suggested that the boys and girls’ agriculture club, which has been established at the school, would be a suitable object. The-cup is at present held by Mr. N. Hunt, Hurleyville,. and the belt by Mr. I. Brunton, Manutaht , , It was further decided that the realisation committee be authorised to hand over to the school committee, free of charge, any timber suitable for the erection of gymnastic equipment; and that after the whole assets have been

realised upon, half be handed over _to the hall committee and half, to the library committee. The rifle club was established in 1924, the first shoot being held on March 12 of that year. The late Mr. T. Geary, on whose property the range was situated, was the president, and a strong supporter of the club. Appreciation of the late Mr. Geary’s support was made by all members present at the meeting. The late Mr. R. Brunton was the first secretary. The club was very successfully conducted until 1927, when the subdivision of the Geary estate interferred with the range. The annual s:eial evening of the club was one of the outstanding functions of the year. The club’s assets were valued at over £2O in 1927, when the last balance sheet was presented. They Included a large shed, field telephones, ammunition, targets and other range equipment It is not anticipated that the assets will realise anywhere near their 1927 valuation, but as there is approximately £ll cash in hand there should be a -considerable amount for division between the hall and library committees. Mr. G. P. Anderson has already signified his consent that the belt presented by him should be handed over to the school as suggested. _ Mrs. Cooper, who was recently the guest of Mrs. G. Scown, is now staying with Mrs. R. O. Schwass. Mr. A. B. Muggeridge has returned from a business trip to Wellington, Sympathy will be felt for Mr. A. Thomson in the loss of his father, who died in Hawera last week. Mr. S. R. Denby has returned from Wellington.
