AMERICAN RECOVERY PLAN NEARLY MILLION BENEFIT THEIR DEPRESSION ENDED 40 HOURS WORKING WEEK OTHER INDUSTRIES FOLLOW By Telegraph-Press Assn—Copyright. Washington, July 17. For nearly a million working men and women in the United States the depression was as good as ended to-day, when their wages were suddenly lifted hack to the purchasing level of better days by the voluntary co-operation of industry with the Government. For hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions more, the day holds hope of similar good for time in the immediate future; Textile workers to-day went back to the mills.on a 40-hour week schedule at rates of pay intended to give them the purchasing power of 1929. In the steel mills labour, is earning 15 per cent, more than last week, and in some cases even .better. The, boost back to the 1932 level in countless other industries is near realisation as part of the national recovery programme.
