TARIFF REDUCTION ASKED
BRITISH EXPORTERS’ CLAIMS. COMMISSION HEARS EVIDENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. 4 Wellington, Last Night Individual representations were made to the Tariff Commission to-day. Requests were made for’reductions in ths duty on English wrapping paper, crown seals for bottles, and cigarettes- and tobacco. Mr. E. W. Nicolaus advocated the abolition of all tariffs, which he asserted operated against the return of prosperity. Mr. G. E. > Leighton on behalf of the United Tanners’ Federation, London, applied for a reduction in the duties on certain classes of leather imported from the United Kingdom. He maintained that the protection afforded the New Zealand producer was greater than was necessary to place the United Kingdom producer in the position of a domestic competitor, or in other words the United Kingdom producer had not a full opportunity of reasonable competition on a basis of the relative costs of economical and efficient production. The Commission adjourned until tomorrow, when evidence will be heard in respect to timber, leather, cloth anl machinery.
