Many of the applicants arrived with nothing,' and as there >is ho work for them they consequently become a charge on a community that is already hard pressed to deal with its own local relief problems. Mr. Ritchie expressed the opinion that the present boom by no means justifies the rush that is taking place, and he considers that those who are in poor circumstances would be well advised to give Central ’Otago a wide berth, as the prospects there of employment, let alone sudden wealth, are not encouraging.
