PRIMARY SCHOOLS FOOTBALL

PROGRESS OF ASSOCIATION, ' ORGANISATION ADVANCED. At a meeting of the Primary Schools’ Association Football committee at New Plymouth last night there were present Messrs G. Roper (president), G. Lawrence, S. Woods, V. Par’dnson, E.- Bensley, J. W. Hollows, J. W. Chapman and \ V. Parkinson (hon secretary). x yj The chairman said that while Associa-:. ' S tion supporters in Taranaki were undertaking a new and important task in start- ’ ing the game in primary schools, and z while every means of encouraging boys to play the Soccer code would be err- . ployed, he wished to make it clear that it was not intended tq take boys away from Rugby. The idea was rather to . foster the game among those who beforo played no particular game during the winter. ' Mr. Hallows reported that he had interviewed the headm*ster of the Moturoa school, and that while as yet there had • •. ' been no outstanding progress, there was every prospect of the code obtaining _ good support in that quarter. A special muster 'of boys was to be held on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Bensley had also <,> visited Moturoa school, and had organis- ;?;)] ed practices, about a dozen boys taking W/ part. Many more were expected to join < after the muster on Wednesday. .7 ' ; ' Mr. Chapman reported that at Fitzroy '/■'.-.i he had organised three teams, one A and two B grade, but practices had been j hindered somewhat by the weather. . ; There was much promising material. 7 Mr. Lawrence could say little aboul - 'ijy Vogeltown, as when he visited the school no ball had then been available. , Mr. Hallows remarked, however, .that / Mr. G. H. Gorringe had been able to conduct a practice at the school since arrival of a ball. Mr." Parkinson said he was training two 7; teams, one for each grade at West End, 26 having turned out o the last practice 7 and another seven having agreed to play. Through the efforts of Mr. Gor- - ringe, too, two teams had been formed ■ 7.?.; at the Central School The position at --V-’J Waitara was as yet unknown. The question of a suitable date for commencing a competition was brought ‘ forward by Mr. Hollows. Next Satur- ■ •). day was not suitable, he thought, as the ■ teams were not yet ready. The position ~7 was still very indefinite, as there were ■ prospects of several more teams being ready to participate within a week’s time. 7 , It was therefore decided that to enable the teams to be properly organised the competition should not start until July ' 29. To arrange the draw Messrs. Roper, ' .i Parkinson and Chapman were appoint- ' ■ ed a sub-committee. In the meantime a. preliminary competition was arranged ' ? for next Saturday, the draw being at follows:— .■ ’7 Fitzroy A v. Central A, at Fitzroy. > Fitzroy B v. Central B, at Fitzroy. Referees, Messrs. Gorringe and Chap- - J.<7 man. .' ; Moturoa, v. West End B, at racecourse. < Vogeltown v. West End A, at race- 7 course. ’.'-<1 It was decided that the existing colours 7 of the various schools be used by teams in the . competition. . The Stratford Association Football Club, wrote nominating Messrs J. Benjamin and L. Trueman to be responsible for . tthe management of Soccer in the schools of that district It was stated in another > / letter from the same club that prospects of organising teams at Stratford and Tahora were good.' ' - The secretary was instructed to write ’ to the Stratford club thanking .it for what it had done, and notifying it that two balls for the use of the schools were being forwarded. . ; ' A letter from the West End school . _ committee thanking the committee for its interest and for the donation of a ball was received. .. • The matter of postponement of games in case of wet weather being raised, Messrs. Parkinson, Roper and Chapman were appointed x a postponement committee to notify players of changes in 7 u order to save worry, on.the part of parents. :
