NEW HOUSES FOR HAWERA.
APPLICATIONS FOR SUBSIDY. Three new dwellings will probably be erected in Hawera this year as the result of the Unemployment Board’s building subsidy. Five applications have been lodged at the Hawera Post Office involving a total expenditure of £2500. When the late depression set in building returns for Hawera showed a substantial decrease. From 20 in 1029 the erection of houses fell to two in 1931 and one last year, and in the same period the value fell from £16,716 to £7BO. Three of the applications for subsidy are for Hawera dwellings, and two for country houses. The amount in each case is below the £650 limit Two of the applications have been granted. So far no applications have been received for subsidies on business premises in Hawera. Last year there was a subsidy on the substantial renovations to the Old People’s Home.
