MOKAU DISTRICT NEWS
NUMEROUS SLIPS ON MAIN ROAD.
As a result of the recent heavy rains in the Mokau-Awakino district, numerous slips have occurred on the main road. About four miles north of Awakino, near the White Bridge, a large stump and several tons of earth temporarily blocked the roadway, and caused some inconvenience to early traffic. However, the Public Works Department roadmen were early on the job and soon had the road sufficiently cleared to enable traffic to proceed. Both the Mokau and Awakino rivers are in flood, and owing to the heavy rains they are still rising. The presence of trees and other floating debris, in the Mokau River, is causing delay to shipping, and it is anticipated that it will be some days before conditions improve. On Monday morning an Awakino resident, Mr. Samuel McKane, received painful injuries to his right hand while splitting firewood. While removing a wedge he had the misfortune to fall on an axe and sever the top of his middle finger.
