“ABSURDITY” IN CABINET
ATTORNEY-GENERAL LAYMAN DANNEVIRKE CHAMBER’S PROTEST NEXT UPPER HOUSE APPOINTEE. LEADING BARRISTER PROPOSED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, July 18. “That the Government, in making its next appointment to the Legislative Council, be recommended to appoint a leading member of the Bar to fill the position of Attorney-General,” was a resolution of the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce on the motion of Mr. A. McNicol. Mr. McNicol said the position was a most important one and should be filled by a man capable of advising Cabinet on the principles of British law and not political theories. At present they had not the benefit of a single business man from the House of Representatives in the Cabinet.
It was absurd that a layman like Mr. Forbes should hold the Attorney-Gener-alship. This office should be one of the most important in the Cabinet. One member said it was remarkable that the New Zealand Law Society had not taken up the matter.
