DOCTORS’ SALARIES CUT

AUCKLAND HOSPITAL BOARD REINSTATEMENT MOVE FAILS. “MOST RESPONSIBLE OFFICERS.” LINKING OF POSITIONS REGRETTED By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Reductions in the salaries of Dr. J. W. Craven and Dr. C. Maguire, medical superintendents of the Auckland hospital and Auckland infirmary respectively, were made at the June meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board. The matter was dealt with in committee and it was decided to reduce Dr. Craven’s salary from £l2OO to £llOO and Dr. Maguire’s from £990 to £BOO, these being the only reductions made. At the board meeting to-day a motion that these salary reductions be rescinded was debated, when Mr. E. H. Potter said it was difficult to understand why the board had chosen its most responsible officers for salary reductions. Dr. Gunson said he was sorry the two salaries had been bracketed, as in his view the positions were not of equal importance. “Dr. Maguire is not holding a post worthy a penny more than £BOO a year,” Dr. Gunson said. “As for. Dr. Craven, the reduction in salary is most unwarranted as his is the most important position of its kind in New Zealand.” , „ t The motion was lost by five votes to four.
