BLISSFUL IGNORANCE
PASSENGERS DID NOT KNOW. (STEAMER ON A REEF. “How do you like being shipwrecked?” asked one tourist of another at breakfast on the morning that the vessel left Port Moresby. “What on earth are you talking about?” replied the other, and to his astonishment the questioner found that his companion at the table did not even know that the liner had been hard on a reef the previous evening. As he strolled about the deck later in the morning, the questioner found that many other passengers were just as ignorant of what had happened. Tired out after a strenuous day ashore they • had retired for a few hours’-sleep when the Maloja sailed at 5 o'clock, and did not awaken' until it was time to dress for dinner shortly before eight.. And officers of the ship proceeded so quietly and unostentatiously about the business of getting off the reef again that no fuss had been made sufficient to awaken them.
