RESORTS IN REVOLT

MINISTER'S RATE THREAT. Seaside towns throughout Great Britain are in revolt against the proposal of the Minister of Health, Sir E. Hilton Young, that they should pay an extra £500,000 in rates this year so that the relief of distress in industrial areas might be made possible. The residents have made it clear to the Minister that although they sym-

pathise with the hard-hit districts, they think that the solution is not to be found in demanding more from towns which have managed to keep down their rates by stringent economy. It is also pleaded that many of the seaside towns themselves are distressed. Many boarding-houses have had to

close altogether, and women who used to have guest houses of their own are now working as kitchen hands and chambermaids in hotels. The Association of Municipal Corporations, on which the seaside towns are represented, has appointed a committee to investigate the Minister’s scheme.
