FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. The Kaponga branch of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting on Thursday, when there was a good attendance. Mr. D. P. Malone presided. The lecture by Mr. E. H. Linell on lime, its uses and abuses, which was to have been given that evening had to be postponed owing to unforeseen circumstances preventing the lecturer from keeping his appointment. Correspondence was received regarding the swine fever outbreak, and the secretary read a paper from the Journal of Agriculture dealing with stock complaints and their remedies. A discussion followed, during which special mention was made of foot and mouth disease. In this connection the meeting was strongly opposed to the lifting of th© embargo on imported stock. Congratulations were extended to Mr. C. N. Gordge upon winning the ensilage championship at the winter show at Stratford, and to Mr. J. P. Gibson upon the fine record put up by his herd in the group herd testing. His 81 cows averaged 4021 b of butterfat which is thought to be one of the best records jn Taranaki and shows what can be done by systematic farming. The judging of the hay and ensilage crops is to be undertaken on July 28, the judges being Mr. C. Haynes, and Mr. J. M. Smith. A lecture on pig breeding has been arranged to take place, this month, the speaker being Mr. Gorringe. School Football. Playing at Victoria Park, Kaponga, in drizzling rain, with a heavy field, the Kaponga combined schools’ football team defeated the Pihama-Oeo team by 11 points to nil. The game was a forward one and was rougher than is usual with school football. Scores for the home team were obtained by Behl, Belger and L. Carrington, and Brisco converted one of the tries. Mr. R. Noonan refereed. The match was the second in the second round of the competition, in which Kaponga now has a lead of six points.
